Pastoral Leadership Program

The Seminary’s Pastoral Leadership Program began in the fall of 2003. The program’s goal is to enhance the pastoral preparation of seminarians by fostering leadership and management skills and providing a structured forum for the presentation and discussion of the following ideals:
• Practical realities in light of the social teachings of the Church;
• Critical topics in managing human, physical, and financial resources;
• Maximizing the opportunities of the ecclesial, civil and communal, and corporate contexts in
which a priest ministers.
Previous conferences include:
• Defining the Vision of Pastoral Stewardship, October 4, 2003. Speakers included Mr. John C. Marous, Jr., retired Chief Executive Officer of Westinghouse Corp. and Chairman of the Seminary Board of Regents; Most Rev. Bernard W. Schmitt, Retired Bishop of Wheeling-Charleston; Rev. Robert Sirico, founder of the Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty; Rev. John Haney, pastor of Saint Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Parish, Diocese of Pittsburgh.
• Leadership of the Church in the Modern World, November 22, 2003. Speakers included The Hon. Maureen E. Lally-Green, Judge, Superior Court of Pennsylvania; Most Rev. Donald W. Wuerl, Bishop of Pittsburgh; Carl A. Eck, Esq., Meyer, Darraugh, Buckler, Bebenek & Eck; Nicholas P. Cafardi, J.D., J.C.L., Dean and Professor of Law at Duquesne University School of Law and Chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops National Review Board; Rev. William Byron, S.J., Interim President, Loyola University.

• Leadership: Management of the Church’s Financial Assets, October 2, 2004. Speakers included Very Rev. Lawrence DiNardo, Director of the Department of Canon and Civil Law Services and Episcopal Vicar for Canonical Services for the Diocese of Pittsburgh; Ms. Rita Ferko Joyce, J.D., J.C.L., Director of the Office for Civil Legal Services for the Diocese of Pittsburgh; Mr. Fred O’Brien, Chief Financial Officer of the Diocese of Pittsburgh; Mr. John M.
