Seminarians Ordained to Diaconate April 12
LATROBE, PENNSYLVANIA — Eight seminarians attending Saint Vincent Seminary, Latrobe, Pennsylvania, were ordained to the diaconate on Saturday, April 12, by Most Rev. J. Kevin Boland, D.D., Bishop of Savannah, at the Archabbey Basilica.
The seminarians are Br. Paulo Panza, O.S.B., and Br. Boniface Hicks, O.S.B., of Saint Vincent Archabbey; Eric Filmer, Diocese of Savannah; David Young, Diocese of Columbus; Cyril Chae, Archdiocese of Atlanta; Alex Andrua, Diocese of Arua, Uganda; Samuel Odeh, Diocese of Makurdi, Nigeria; Br. Gabriel Landis, O.S.B., Saint Benedict’s Abbey, Atchison, Kansas.
SAINT VINCENT ARCHABBEY
Brother Paulo S. Panza, O.S.B., is a son of Mario and Josefina Locatelly Panza. Brother Paulo attended Colegio Sao Luis, Sao Paulo High School, and received a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy from the Pontifical University of Campinas. He also studied theology there. He earned a master of divinity degree from Saint Vincent Seminary in 1995. He made solemn profession of vows July 11, 1986. At the Benedictine Priory in Brazil, he has served as guest master at the Monastery, and worked with the youths of the parishes to foster Christian vocations. He also served as sacristan and organist there.
Br. Boniface P. Hicks, O.S.B., is the son of William and Mary Hicks of Burke, Virginia. His home diocese is Altoona-Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He is a 1993 graduate of Lake Braddock Secondary School. He earned a bachelor of science degree in computer science from Penn State University in 1998 and a master of science degree in computer science from Penn State in 1998.
DIOCESE OF SAVANNAH
Eric R. Filmer of the Diocese of Savannah, Georgia, is the son of Charles H. Filmer of Savannah, Georgia, and the late Robin L. Harrison. He is a 1984 graduate of Hershel V. Jenkins High School, Savannah, Georgia. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in psychology in 1997 from Armstrong Atlantic State University. He also attended Savannah College of Art and Design.He is from the Diocese of Savannah, Georgia.
DIOCESE OF COLUMBUS
David J. Young is the son of Richard E. and Jeanne M. Young of Columbus, Ohio. He is a 1996 graduate of St. Francis DeSales High School. He attended Ohio State University and the Pontifical College Josephinum, Columbus, where he received a degree in philosophy in 2000.
ARCHDIOCESE OF ATLANTA
Cyril Chae is the son of Sun-ik Chae and Cho-Young Noh of Seoul, Korea. He completed high school in 1976 in Seoul, Korea and studied for two years at Saint Vincent’s College Seminary in Quezon City, Philippines. He earned a diploma of philosophy and theology from Saint Vincent School of Theology in the Philippines.
DIOCESE OF ARUA, UGANDA
Alex Andrua is from the Diocese of Arua, Uganda. He is a 1996 graduate of Dokea Seminary, Arua, Uganda. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy in 1999 from Alokolum National Major Seminary, Gulu-Uganda.
DIOCESE OF MAKURDI, NIGERIA
Samuel Odeh is the son of Justina A. Odeh of Otukp, Nigeria and the late Boniface E. Odeh. He is a 1993 graduate of Mt. St. Gabriel’s Second School, Makurdi, Nigeria. He earned a bacheor of arts degree in philosophy from St. Thomas Aquinas Major Seminary, Makurdi, in 1998.He is a member of the Via Christi Society, Makurdi Diocese.
SAINT BENEDICT'S ABBEY
Br. Gabriel A. Landis, O.S.B., is the son of Sam and Shirley Landis of Wichita, Kansas and the late Carole Landis. He is a 1981 graduate of Wichita East High School. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in finance from Wichita State University in 1986 and a master of arts degree in management from Webster University in 1994.
