Eleven Seminarians in Rite of Admission to Candidacy
LATROBE, PENNSYLVANIA — Eleven Saint Vincent seminarians from six dioceses and archdioceses and two abbeys were admitted to Candidacy for Holy Orders on November 25 by the Most Rev. R. Daniel Conlon, Bishop of Steubenville, Ohio. The seminarians were Br. Boniface Hicks, O.S.B., Saint Vincent Archabbey; Eric Filmer, Diocese of Savannah, Georgia; David Young, Diocese of Columbus, Ohio; H. Christopher Foxhoven and Timothy Kozak, Diocese of Steubenville; Cyril Chae, Archdiocese of Atlanta, Georgia; Samuel Odeh and John Paul Otanwa, Diocese of Makurdi, Nigeria; Alex Andrua, Diocese of Arua, Uganda; Viliamu Emanuele, Diocese of Mandeville, Jamaica and Br. Gabriel Landis, O.S.B., Saint Benedict’s Abbey, Atchison, Kansas.
SAINT VINCENT ARCHABBEY
Br. Boniface P. Hicks, O.S.B., is the son of William and Mary Hicks of Burke, Virginia. His home diocese is Altoona-Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He is a 1993 graduate of Lake Braddock Secondary School. He earned a bachelor of science degree in computer science from Penn State University in 1998 and a master of science degree in computer science from Penn State in 1998.
DIOCESE OF SAVANNAH
Eric R. Filmer of the Diocese of Savannah, Georgia, is the son of Charles H. Filmer of Savannah, Georgia, and the late Robin L. Harrison. He is a 1984 graduate of Hershel V. Jenkins High School, Savannah, Georgia. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in psychology in 1997 from Armstrong Atlantic State University. He also attended Savannah College of Art and Design.
DIOCESE OF COLUMBUS
David J. Young is the son of Richard E. and Jeanne M. Young of Columbus, Ohio. He is a 1996 graduate of St. Francis DeSales High School. He attended Ohio State University and the Pontifical College Josephinum, Columbus, where he received a degree in philosophy in 2000.
DIOCESE OF STEUBENVILLE
H. Christopher Foxhoven is the son of Henry F. and Arlene M. Foxhoven of Bloomingdale, Ohio. He attended Harlan Community High School in Harlan, Iowa, and graduated in 1994 from Our Lady of the Rosary Home-School. He received a bachelor of arts degree in theology from Franciscan University of Steubenville in 1999.
Timothy J. Kozak is the son of Mike and Rose Marie Kozak of Barberton, Ohio. He is a 1975 graduate of Barberton High School, Barberton, Ohio. He earned a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from the University of Akron, Ohio, in 1980.
ARCHDIOCESE OF ATLANTA
Cyril Soo-Gil Chae is the son of Sun-ik Chae and Cho-Young Noh of Seoul, South Korea. He completed high school in 1976 in Seoul, and studied for two years at Saint Vincent’s College Seminary in Quezon City, Philippines. He earned a diploma of philosophy and theology from Saint Vincent School of Theology in the Philippines.
DIOCESE OF MAKURDI, NIGERIA
Samuel Odeh is the son of Justina A. Odeh of Otukp, Nigeria and the late Boniface E. Odeh. He is a 1993 graduate of Mt. St. Gabriel’s Secondary School, Makurdi, Nigeria. He earned a bacheor of arts degree in philosophy from St. Thomas Aquinas Major Seminary, Makurdi, in 1998.
John-Paul A. Otanwa is the son of Boniface and Patricia Otanwa of Makurdi, Nigeria. He is a 1996 graduate of Mount Saint Gabriel Secondary School, Makurdi. He attended St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary in Makurdi from 1997 to 2000.
DIOCESE OF ARUA, UGANDA
Alex Andrua is from the Diocese of Arua, Uganda. He is a 1996 graduate of Dokea Seminary, Arua, Uganda. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy in 1999 from Alokolum National Major Seminary, Gulu, Uganda.
DIOCESE OF MANDEVILLE, JAMAICA
Viliamu V. Emanuele is the son of Emanuele Lilo and Akenese Lilo of Savaii, Western Samoa. He is a 1984 graduate of St. Peter Chanel High School, Western Samoa. He majored in philosophy at Moamoa Theological College and the College of St. Thomas.
SAINT BENEDICT’S ABBEY
Br. Gabriel A. Landis, O.S.B., is the son of Sam and Shirley Landis of Wichita, Kansas and the late Carole Landis. He is a 1981 graduate of Wichita East High School. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in finance from Wichita State University in 1986 and a master of arts degree in management from Webster University in 1994.
