Statement of Bishop David A. Zubik on the Appointment of Father Timothy F. Whalen as Rector of Saint Vincent Seminary

Given the long-standing relationship between the Diocese of Pittsburgh and Saint Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, I am extremely pleased, that following the nomination of Father Whalen as Rector, the Bishop Members of the Board of Regents of the Seminary recommended the appointment of Father Timothy Whalen as Rector of Saint Vincent Seminary to the Chancellor, Archabbot Douglas Nowicki. I have known Father Whalen for nearly 40 years and know how gifted he is, how enthused he is about priestly formation and how well versed he is in it. As a priest of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, Father Whalen has used his multiple gifts and talents in the service of the Church, particularly as Chancellor of Orchard Lake Schools in Orchard Lake, Michigan for more than a decade.  The Most Reverend Mark L. Bartchak, Bishop of the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, has been elected to the Board of Regents. He was ordained and installed as the eighth Bishop of the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown on April 19, 2011. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Erie on May 15, 1981, by the late Bishop Michael J. Murphy at St. Peter Cathedral, Erie. In 2000 he received papal honors from Pope John Paul II with the title of Chaplain to His Holiness. Read More

Saint Vincent Seminary will honor two outstanding members of its Board of Regents at its forthcoming Alumni Day Mass and Banquet, scheduled for Monday, September 19, 2011. Tribute will be paid to His Eminence Donald Cardinal Wuerl, a member of the Board of Regents for 24 years, and Dr. John C. Marous, Jr., retired chairman of the Seminary’s Board of Regents and a member for 20 years. The Alumni Day Mass will begin at 4 p.m. in the Archabbey Basilica, with Cardinal Wuerl serving as Principal Celebrant and Homilist. The Mass is open to the general public.
