Eight Admitted to Candidacy

LATROBE, PENNSYLVANIA —Eight men studying at Saint Vincent Seminary were admitted to candidacy for the priesthood during a Mass on October 31 celebrated by The Most Rev. Roger J. Foys, D.D., Bishop of Covington.The seminarians are Edgar Otero-Ruiz of the Archdiocese of Atlanta; Brother Frowin Reed, O.S.B., of Conception Abbey, Missouri; Timothy Marcoe of the Diocese of Harrisburg; Stephen Pontzer of the Diocese of Savannah; Seth Wymer of the Diocese of Steubenville; Matthew Albright of the Diocese of Youngstown; Brother Shawn Matthew Anderson, O.S.B., and Brother Matthias Martinez, O.S.B., of Saint Vincent Archabbey.

Dr. Scott Hahn Inaugurates Lecture Series

The Pope Benedict XVI Chair of Biblical Theology and Liturgical Proclamation at Saint Vincent Seminary has been established thanks to generous donations from Mr. and Mrs. John F. Donahue and Dr. and Mrs. George Magovern, Sr. Dr. Scott Hahn, the inaugural Chair, will speak at a lecture at 7:30 p.m. Monday, November 28, in the Robert S. Carey Performing Arts Center on the Saint Vincent campus.

They are Juan Francisco Anzora and Gilbert Exuméof the Archdiocese of Atlanta; Alexandre Souza e Silva de Moura of the Archdiocese of Campinas, Brazil; Matthew B. Baum of the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown; Martin J. Pitstick of the Diocese of Covington; John Paul Kuzma of the Diocese of Erie; Luis A. Fonseca of the Diocese of Savannah; Stephen P. McGinnis of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston; Christopher Henyk and Michael Zábrecky of the Diocese of Youngstown; and Brother Patrick Egan, O.S.B., of Saint Bernard Abbey, Cullman, Alabama.

Seminary Welcomes 26 New Students

LATROBE, PENNSYLVANIA — Saint Vincent Seminary welcomed twenty-six new students for the 2005-2006 academic year. They are from the Archdiocese of Atlanta, the dioceses of Altoona-Johnstown, Covington, Harrisburg, Ogdensburg, Pittsburgh, Savannah, Steubenville, Wheeling-Charleston, Youngstown; Saint Vincent Archabbey, Subiaco Abbey, Arkansas; the Order of Sacred and Immaculate Hearts in the Diocese of Steubenville. There is also a new lay student in the Master of Arts program from Uniontown.

White House Director to Keynote Red Mass September 30

Jim Towey, Assistant to the President of the United States and Director of the White House Office of Faith-Based & Community Initiatives, will be the keynote speaker at the thirty-eighth annual Red Mass, to be held at noon Friday, September 30 in the Saint Vincent Archabbey Basilica. Most Rev. Lawrence E. Brandt, J.C.D., Ph.D., will be the principal celebrant. Archabbot Douglas R. Nowicki, O.S.B., will concelebrate. The Red Mass is sponsored by Saint Vincent Archabbey, Seminary, and College and the Diocese of Greensburg.

Paul R. Whiteside Appointed Director of Development

Paul R. Whiteside of Pittsburgh has been appointed as Director of Development for Saint Vincent Archabbey and Seminary. He returns to Saint Vincent after completing his undergraduate work at Saint Vincent College in mathematics and psychology. He also holds a Master's in Business Administration degree from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh.

Bishop Jugis Ordains Three to Diaconate April 2

LATROBE, PENNSYLVANIA Bishop Peter J. Jugis of the Diocese of Charlotte, North Carolina, ordained three men to the diaconate at Saint Vincent Seminary on April 2. Two of the men, H. Alejandro Ayala and Br. Marion Charboneau, O.S.B., are seminarians at Saint Vincent, while the third, James Stuhrenberg of the Diocese of Charlotte, is a seminarian at Blessed John XXIII National Seminary in Weston, Massachusetts.
