2002-1 Spring Leaven

This 32-page color issue features interviews with three deacons from the Diocese of Tulsa, Diocese of Greensburg and the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, who are completing their final year in formation and are preparing for ordination. His Eminence Paul Cardinal Shan, Bishop of Kaohsiung, received an honorary doctorate at commencement and the late Dr. Rizal V. Pangilinan, a board of regents member, is remembered for his humanitarian efforts. Three men were ordained to the diaconate in April, a new faculty member joined the staff, degree recipients were honored and alumni news and notes given. Guest speakers included Robert Mendler, a Holocaust survivor; Dr. Erasmo Leiva, a professor of literature and theology at the University of San Francisco, and Rev. Kris Stubna, Secretary for Education in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. The Seminary's own Father Demetrius Dumm spoke in the Diocese of Youngstown. A 16-page annual report is included with this issue.

2002-2 Fall Leaven

His Eminence Adam Cardinal Maida, Archbishop of Detroit, and a Saint Vincent graduate, was honored with an honorary doctorate at the Annual Alumni Day Mass and Banquet. Photos of the event are included in this issue. Academic Dean Sr. Cecilia Murphy continues her work on the Association for Theological Schools Commission on Accrediting, and three new members have joined the Board of Regents, including Most Rev. Roger Foys, Bishop of Covington; Hon. Maureen E. Lally-Green, a judge of the Superior Court of Pennsylvania; and Mr. Harry F. Murray, a former chief financial officer and vice president of finance at Westinghouse. Steubenville has a new bishop, Most Rev. R. Daniel Conlon, Rev. Michael Heninger, a Seminary graduate, is now a military chaplain; and the school year's new students are welcomed. The opening day picnic and Mass are pictured, and Joan and Victor Ballash, who set up three new Seminary scholarships, are featured. A former Board member, Frank Schneider, is remembered, while the current Board of Regents is pictured. Very Rev. Mauricio West, a Saint Vincent graduate, has been elected administrator of the Diocese of Charlotte, the new Seminary group photo has been published and there is news of the newly-ordained. Other topics include the annual Red Mass, new books by alumni and Board members, ordinations in Slovakia and alumni news and notes.
