2001-1 Spring Leaven

This 28-page issue includes the Seminary's annual report. Cover articles include the appointment of Father Kurt J. Belsole, O.S.B., as Rector, the scholarship dinner at which Pittsburgh Auxiliary Bishop David A. Zubik spoke, and an article about the honorary degree the Seminary bestowed upon Francis Cardinal George, Archbishop of Chicago. An interview with Fr. Kurt and with Father Thomas Acklin, O.S.B., the outgoing rector, is featured inside, as is an article about the reprinting of faculty member Father Demetrius Dumm's book, Flowers in the desert. Fourth-year parish ministry assignments are listed, as are summer courses, an article on the March for Life, and the appointment of Father Drew Morgan to the faculty. Tribute gifts, a list of forthcoming ordinations, Seminary news and notes, and an article by Thomas Burke on what it is like to be a deacon in transition to the priesthood round out the issue. The Annual Report is 14 pages of this issue and features letters from Father Kurt, Mr. John P. Marous, Jr., Chairman of the Board of Regents, and Archabbot Douglas R. Nowicki, O.S.B., Chancellor, as well as the usual lists of donors.

2001-2 Fall Leaven

A 24-page issue is chock full of news of the Seminary's past and forthcoming activities. Very Rev. Mauricio West, Vicar General of the Diocese of Charlotte, who has two degrees from the Seminary, was homilist and keynote speaker at the Alumni Day Mass in October. Father Augustine Di Noia, O.P., will be honored at the Seminary's commencement on May 10, 2002, while photos from the 2001 commencement in this summer/fall edition featured His Eminence Francis Cardinal George, Archbishop of Chicago, who received an honorary doctor of divinity degree. A new Dean of Students, Father Kevin Dominik; a new director of Spiritual Formation, Father Thomas More Sikora, O.S.B.; and the appointment of Father Cyprian Constantine, O.S.B., as acting Academic Dean were featured. Various visitors to our campus from around the world are pictured, and recent ordinations recounted. New students are pictured. There is an excerpt from the new book by Father Demetrius Dumm, O.S.B., faculty member, A Mystical Portrait of Jesus: New Perspectives on John's Gospel. The life of Father Robert Burns, who passed away after being ordained a priest for the Diocese of Harrisburg, is remembered. This issue features photos from recent events such as the scholarship dinner and alumni day activities, and the announcement of a joint recruiting program between Saint Vincent and Saint Paul seminaries. A column on year-end giving and four pages of alumni news and notes round out the newsletter.
